Planning your Arran holiday
How to get here
Hamilton Cottages are located in a picturesque rural setting at Shedog in the Shiskine valley. To help you locate us please click on the “where are we located?” button on the left which will open an interactive map of Arran at our location. The map is a functional Google map and will help you plan your route.
Before you can relax and enjoy you Arran holiday you have to get here. There are two ferry routes to the Isle of Arran. The main one is Ardrossan to Brodick but there is also a smaller ferry from Kintyre (Cloanaig) to Lochranza in the north of the island. If you have the time and you are not already driving too far, the drive to Cloanaig half way down the Kintyre peninsula is beautiful one. You can check the ferry routes on the map.
If you intend to travel on the main ferry we would always advise that you book your car in advance. For foot passengers booking is unnecessary. You can check ferry times and book on line at the Caledonian McBrayne website by clicking on the button on the left. On the day you are travelling, if you have a smart phone with internet access, you can use our “Arran ferry tracker” at the top of the page to see if the ferry is running to schedule. This is a real time plotter which we have found very handy at times.
If you are not bringing a car it is very easy to get to us by bus. To get here use the “Blackwaterfoot via the String” bus which will be waiting at the ferry terminal. Ask the driver to stop at “Shedog” or Hamilton House and you will be delivered right to our door! To catch a bus from here simply wait outside Hamilton House and stop the bus (There are bus timetables in each cottage).
To get you started
We try to ensure that our self catering cottages are equipped with everything that you will need for a first class self catering experience. You will find that, to get you started, we have provided kitchen hand soap and washing up liquid together with detergent tablets for the dishwasher. In the bathrooms we have left hand soap tablets and of course toilet rolls. In our laundry you will find washing detergent both bio and non bio together with fabric softener although of course you may prefer to bring your own favourite brand.
Don’t worry, if you forget your toothbrush we have a range of common items for sale in our laundry including toilet rolls, kitchen rolls, cling film, small packs of dishwasher tablets, etc (and of course toothbrushes!). Just help yourself and put the money in the honesty box.
Kitchen and catering
The kitchens in our cottages are extremely well equipped and have an extensive range of cooking utensils so it is doubtful that you will need to bring anything extra.
All towels are provided at no extra cost. There will be a bath towel, a hand towel, and a face flannel provided for each person in your party. There will also be bath sheets provided in each shower room. You should, however, bring your own beach or swimming towels. In the kitchens we will provide a hand towel, two dish towels and oven gloves.
All bed linen is provided (sheets, duvets with covers, pillows and pillow cases. Additional blankets are also in the cottages in case they are needed.
Cot/high chair/baby bath
These are available at no additional cost so if you need any (or all) just let us know before you arrive (preferably when you book) so that we can have them in your cottage for you when you arrive. Please bring your own bed linen for cots.
Shopping for food
There really is no need to use up space in your car with provisions for your holiday. There is a Co-operative supermarket in Brodick where you can get most items. Even more locally you can get a surprisingly good range of produce at Blackwaterfoot which is less than two miles away. Here there is an excellent butcher, a baker and a newsagent and a general store. There is also a garage/petrol station. Bridge farm which is also less than a couple of miles away will sell you fresh eggs, milk and all manner of vegetables straight from the ground.
WiFi - if you need to keep in touch
Being on the island may just make you want to forget that the rest of the world exists, but if you feel the need to surf the net or keep in touch with your e-mails, our cottages are covered by our fast Wifi broadband network. You will need your laptop or iPhone. We make no charge for using the network but ask you not to abuse our connection by game playing or music/video downloading.
Since we live in Hamilton House (right next door to the cottages) we are usually around if you need any help or information.
